Two associations representing parks and recreation professionals and the firearms industry issued statements expressing condolences for the victims of Wednesday's attack on members of Congress and staff at a public park in Alexandria, Va.
Five people were wounded in the mass shooting, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) The shooter was reportedly motivated by anger at Republicans and was shot and killed by Capitol Police during the attack.
Barbara Tulipane, CEO of the National Recreation and Park Association, issued a statement after the shooting saying her group was "deeply saddened by the events that took place this morning."
"A lone gunman acting out of hatred and likely mental illness brought fear and violence to a place where people come together for health, unity and peace, just like our members of Congress did this morning," Tulipane said. "As we move forward, we ask people to continue to embrace local parks and recreation centers as places we can all gather and unite in the fight against hate and violence, regardless of background, race or ability."
The National Shooting Sports Foundation, which represents the firearms industry, issued a short statement on the front page of its website about the attack. NSSF is located in Newtown, Conn., which was the site of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all the victims who were shot this morning including Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana," NSSF said. "We salute the first responders, including the Capitol Police, who quickly stepped in to end the vicious criminal attack."
